They compared the draft human genome of shotgun method with the latest draft from "Human Genome Project", after that they found that the shotgun method cannot detect the recurring DNA fragments, which accounted for 3% to 5% of the genome. So this re-examination contributed a lot to research genetic diseases.
Egyptian Van Eichler, who took care of this project, said in an interview that this flaw cannot deny the role of “shotgun method” in its field. What’s more, it is really significant when we are doing the rapid DNA sequencing. The most efficient way to detect DNA is to combine the two methods together: firstly, we can use the shotgun approach to detect the whole DNA fragment and then we can use the traditional way to analyze the areas, where shotgun method cannot detect.
